January Jobs to Tick Off the List

January is the month of fresh starts, big promises, and the sudden realization that your house survived the holidays, but not without scars. While everyone else is busy making fitness resolutions they’ll forget by February, January is actually the perfect time to tackle a few practical home jobs. It’s the reset that you need for your living space, without the motivational speeches to push you on as you do it. The best place to begin? Indoors.

Starting your January jobs inside is smart because that’s where it’s warm and your enthusiasm is highest. Take advantage of the quieter pace to declutter. January is all about fresh starts, so holiday decorations, gift packaging and that suspicious drawer full of batteries all need attention. If you haven’t used something in a year, January is quietly judging you. Donate, recycle or bin it and enjoy the strange satisfaction of empty shelves.

It’s also a good time to book in to get your heating and boiler system checked. January is when boilers decide to test your emotional resilience because we’re in the dead of winter. Bleed the radiators and replace any filters, but listen out for any sounds that suggest your system is trying to communicate in Morse code. If you do the maintenance now, you won’t have to wear free sweaters indoors later on. While you’re busy booking in the heating and boiler system, make sure that you check your windows and doors. Cold draughts have a sneaky way of slipping in unnoticed along with higher energy bills, so check the seals, replace worn weather stripping and make sure everything closes properly. It’s not about glamour, but neither is paying to heat the outdoors.

January is also the time to think about pest prevention. Colder weather pushes unwanted visitors to look for warm shelter, and while you may not want to call a rat exterminator, they are the best person to call if you’ve noticed that you’ve got signs of rodents. Your house can seem very inviting, especially if you haven’t yet decluttered the kitchen, and there’s lots of space for crumbs to hide. The kitchen does need some January love too, because after weeks of heavy use, it’s time to clean appliances properly and not just the parts that people can see. Emptying and wiping down the fridge, descaling the kettle and giving the oven a deep clean are just a good start. Sure, it’s annoying, but it’s not going to clean itself.

After you’ve sorted out the inside, don’t forget the outside. Even if you’d rather not step into the cold, clearing gutters of leaves and debris so melting snow and winter rain can drain properly is smart. Checking your fences, sheds and gates for storm damage so that you can make the right fixes now is also going to keep your home secure. While we’re sitting in all of the January jobs that you need to do, make a plan for the year ahead. List any home projects you want to tackle and set your intentions for the year. It’s not about perfection, but it’s just about setting those intentions ahead.
