Every country we visit has something worth trying at least once, be it traditional products or items that are associated with it because of a great marketing campaign. Instead of falling for the tourist traps and ending up purchasing objects that have no meaning, why not go for something a bit unusual?
Whether you are getting souvenirs for yourself, or for your friends and family, you will be happier knowing you spent your money on something you can truly treasure.
Olive oil from Greece
Greek virgin olive oil is regarded as the best in the world and it has been part of the country’s history since forever. It is an irreplaceable ingredient in most of its dishes, from jacket potatoes and salads to moussaka and fish, due to its health properties. It has also been used in skin and hair care products, so while you’re there, don’t just pick up a few bottles of olive oil, try out some of their cosmetic products as well!
Snus from Sweden
Sweden is known for many things, particularly for its great skincare products and Scandinavian-style textiles, but there are other items worth buying that not many tourists are acquainted with. Snus, a smokeless tobacco product that originated in Sweden 200 years ago, is considered a better alternative to smoking. Although not so popular in other countries, it is a common experience amongst locals. For worldwide delivery, there are websites that offer tax free snus.
Leather from Italy

Italians have a great reputation for their leather, which is being used in bags, shoes, belts and watch bands. What makes Italian leather so luxurious is the process behind it. This special traditional technique involving vegetable tanning has been invented in Tuscany, where it is still being used today. Of course, you don’t have to go specifically to Tuscany to enjoy premium leather as most cities sell vintage bags and shoes at affordable prices. Even better, in some places, you can get bespoke sandals done inside the store to fit your measurements.
Lacquer box from Russia
Originating in Russia in the 17th century, lacquer boxes are some of the country’s greatest achievements in the arts sector. The boxes are made of papier-mâché, hand-painted to the tiniest details and polished many times. Each box explores a different theme that can vary from fairy tales and poems to landscapes and country life. This type of art is part of Russia’s affinity with miniature painting, which includes other well-known souvenirs, such as the Matryoshka doll and Khokhloma.
Coffee & Tea from Turkey

The bazaars of Istanbul are full of colourful rugs, ceramics, and lamps, but none of them will make you reminisce of your holiday there as well as a cup of strong, Turkish coffee or tea will. Turks drink tea all day long and it is part of their tradition to offer you a cup as well when you enter their shops. High-quality tea and coffee are easy to find because it is pretty much everywhere. And while you’re there, you might consider treating yourself to a copper coffee set since Turkey is famous for its art of copper.
Of course, each country mentioned above has a lot more to offer, but you have to consider the practicability of the souvenir you decide to bring back home with you. After all, it is nice to use the items you spend money on and not just put them in a drawer and forget they even exist.
