Your wedding day is an incredibly special and exciting time. From the decorations and seating plan to flower arrangements and entertainment, there’s a lot of thought and consideration that goes into the finer details.
Perhaps you’re thinking about certain wedding traditions you’d like to include on the big day. There are so many traditions around the world, so why not try something unique and take inspiration from different cultures?
In this article, we’ll be exploring wedding traditions around the world and how you can implement them into your special day.
Bridal crowns

In Norway, brides typically wear crowns at their wedding to deflect evil spirits. The crown is made from ornate silver and gold with small charms dangling around it. As the bride moves, the charms will produce a tinkling sound, which is said to banish such evil spirits.
Additionally, Norwegian brides have an elegant Scandinavian cake at their wedding, known as a Kransekake. This delicious towering cake is made using 18 crisp almond cookies, using icing to stick them together.
Hide the groom’s shoes
It’s no surprise that Indian weddings have an array of beautiful traditions that occur before, during, and after the ceremony.
One of these rituals is called “Joota Chupai”. This involves the bride’s sisters and female cousins getting up to mischief by hiding the groom’s shoes. Then, they’ll demand ransom money to ensure their safe return!

In Hindu and Sikh cultures, a key pre-wedding ritual is the mehndi party. This is where henna designs are applied to the bride’s hands and feet to encourage good health and prosperity during her marriage. According to tradition, the deeper the colour of the henna design, the longer it lasts, and therefore, the happier the marriage will be.
Three dress ceremony
Chinese culture typically involves triple the dresses! Brides will walk down the aisle in a slim-fitting, embroidered dress called a traditional qipao or cheongsam. For the reception, they will usually change into a more glamourous gown that boasts Western flair. And finally, to end the night, Chinese brides will change into a stylish cocktail dress.

When planning your wedding dresses, it’s important to consider your guests, too. The photos will look truly beautiful if the women are wearing colourful and elegant wedding guest dresses that complement your own.
Boogie before the ceremony

Lebanese culture encourages the wedding celebrations to get off to a rowdy start! Known as the Zaffe, guests will partake in belly dancing and shouting to music in the bride and groom’s home. This is courtesy of the couple’s friends and family, and there may be professional dancers and musicians involved, too.
The couple is then showered with blessings and flower petals as they leave for the ceremony. It’s a great way to get into the spirit of the big day.
