How to Maximise Loft Storage: An Easy Guide

If you feel like you are running out of space at home, don’t underestimate the potential storage space that your loft or attic holds. Your loft is a readily available, cost-effective and convenient space that can be used to store any items you only need occasionally, freeing up more space in your actual living areas.

To learn how to maximise your loft storage and turn your attic into a valuable space, read on!

1) Install Proper Flooring

Having a stable and level floor in your loft will definitely help you when it comes to maximising storage and making the space more functional. Also, installing some sturdy flooring should improve the safety of the loft space and ensure that no matter how much you choose to store up there, nothing will come crashing through your ceiling!

2) Install a High-Quality Loft Ladder

If your current ladder and hatch are eating into your available loft storage space, it may be time to upgrade your loft access. Bulky loft ladders and small hatches can make accessing your loft space inconvenient and may also prevent you from putting bulkier items in storage and out of sight.

Installing a high-quality, space-saving loft ladder can revolutionise your loft space and make accessing your loft far more convenient, allowing you to easily move and store a wide range of items safely.

3) Maximise Vertical Space

To make the most of your loft’s floor space, you will want to maximise your vertical storage. You can do this by installing hooks or overhead floating shelves where you can store clothes, bags and other items that don’t need frequent access – you may need to get your trusty step ladder out for this job!

Bespoke built-in units also allow you to store your items up and away in high places, taking advantage of the often-sloped ceilings of lofts where large furnishings are unable to fit. You can even utilise the space between trusses by adding raised shelves or platforms!

4) Organise, Organise, Organise

While a loft can be the perfect space to stash just about anything, without structure and organisation it can quickly become unorganised chaos! Using clear plastic boxes (and labelling each one) is a great organisation trick, as the boxes are stackable and you can see what’s inside without having to open them. Vacuum-sealed bags are also great as they can reduce the bulk of larger items like bedding or clothing, saving valuable space.

When organising your loft, try to think about how often you will need to access different items and arrange the space accordingly. You can even create different zones to make item retrieval and identification even easier.

Whether you choose to use clear plastic boxes and labels or build a custom shelf or unit into the wall, pick a storage solution that is easy to maintain and works for your space!

By following this easy guide, you should be able to maximise the storage space in your loft or attic and free up more valuable living space in your home. If you’re lacking the equipment (power tools, ladders, etc.) and man power you need to get the job done, you can always consult with a professional storage specialist or carpenter who can help you design and install a layout that maximises your loft’s space.
