Looking at my column for today, jam packed from start to finish with a variety of treatments takes me back to my college days when I was just starting out.

I look back on my days fondly at YCOB, I was at a stage in my life where I was a little lost, unsure of where I wanted to be in life – this is not the case now! I simply cannot imagine being anything other than a beauty therapist and it’s all thanks to them!

Class began at 9am, the day was beginning and new skills were to be learnt! I quickly made friends with my teammates as we were all keen to learn and excited to get started.

For the first few lessons we learnt the essential theory behind each treatment to be carried out, this included an in depth look at the anatomy and physiology of the human body, ingredients of products, health and safety along with correct technique and application.

After lunch, it was practical learning where we put our newfound knowledge into practice. After a demonstration from our tutor, we were guided through each step of our treatments perfecting them on each other!

Once we were capable and treatments could be carried out safely and correctly, we were ‘let loose’ on actual clients as we carried out our assessment examination for each module.

The tutors were very professional and kept the standards high throughout the entire year, they helped us if we needed any advice and went out of their way to find the answers to our questions.

On returning to the college a few years later to complete higher qualifications, I found the high standards had not changed. The knowledge displayed by the tutors in their specialist subject were second to none and again help and support was available if needed.

Many years have passed since I first walked through those doors, and I have never regretted it!

Julie Thornton’s day. Julie now works at Titanic Spa in Huddersfield.

Hello, my name is Julie and I studied at the Yorkshire College of Beauty (YCOB) for CIDESCO, iTEC and CIBTAC level 2/3 qualifications as a mature student during the 2020/21 academic year.

I arrive at YCOB on a beautiful, sunny morning, it’s 8:45am and I’m looking forward to the day ahead.

After checking in at reception and ensuring I look the part (a neat and tidy professional beautician, complete with day makeup), I walk to the student recreational area and put my tool kit in a locker.  I chat with my fellow students and walk to the theory room with my course notes file and pencil case.

Once settled, the theory lesson starts at 9am, the tutor always makes these lessons interesting by giving us practical examples they themselves have used in the beauty industry. Today it’s theory about deep tissue (Swedish) massage, where I learn about the different types of massage movement and what these do to the various systems within the human body. The knowledge gained in these lessons are vital for exams and future career development.

Before I know it, it’s 12:30pm (lunchtime) and I’m very hungry. It’s off to the student recreational area where I catch up on any phone messages whilst eating lunch and talking with the other students.

Lunchtime ends at 1:30pm and together with my tool kit, I walk to the practical room. In here I find a treatment bed and trolley, which together with another student, is prepared for us to perform Swedish massage practical. I do the massage first on my fellow student, during which I am asked questions about what I am doing and given developmental feedback by my tutor. The practical lessons really do help to reinforce the theory. After I’ve finished my massage, we swap over and it’s my turn to be massaged. Wow! It’s wonderful and I think I fall asleep, it’s so relaxing.

At 4:45pm I start to help tidy up and clean the practical room in order to leave it ready for the next day. My tutor gives a final de-brief, it’s 5pm and I go home.

I’ve had a fabulous day at YCOB and I am looking forward to tomorrow.
