Rooms come in all different shapes and sizes, and we all use the spaces we have differently. Whether you’ve recently added a new addition to your brood or started working from home over the last couple of years, there’s lots of reasons you may suddenly feel tight for space.
With spring in the air, it might be that your home simply feels cluttered, or you may want to revamp your décor and change it up a little. Whatever the reason, Aster Group has revealed some helpful tips for how to maximise space in small rooms.
Wall space

The best space saving solutions are nearly always to do with storage, as clutter is a key factor to rooms feeling and looking smaller than they are. If you’re short on square footage, wall space may be a saving grace. Consider investing in floating shelves, as they provide storage without taking up precious floor space. Not only are floating shelves practical, they can also look incredibly stylish.
Another smart use of wall space is the inclusion of a folding desk; these are great for working from home or for creating a dedicated space for homework. Once you’re done with the working day, simply fold the desk down and regain space. This therefore allows for the room to be completely transformed from one of concentration to relaxation.
Ceiling Space
Another great place to utilise space is above your head, which is a fun and stylish solution often adopted in apartments in Scandinavian cities. From clothes dryers to road bikes on pully systems, there’s so many ways to transform your ceiling and save yourself some ground space.
If you’re a plant lover, but can’t find the space for them, hanging plants from the ceiling can be a great way to greenify your room and bring the outside in without cluttering your floors. Hanging several plants in a row at different heights gives a stylish and striking affect, all while saving space.
Lighting
A slightly less obvious solution and one people often neglect is the lighting of a room. This can be a big contributor to how a space looks and feels. A big bright light can feel stressful, particularly in an evening when you are trying to wind down. Consider investing in smaller, softer lights which illuminate only sections of the room. This will make the space feel bigger by compartmentalising it into sections, instead of one large block. Softer lights will also transform the room into a more relaxing environment, allowing you to enjoy your space in more ways.
Smart Storage

If using the walls and the ceilings of your home isn’t an option, and changing the lighting isn’t quite enough, there are lots of other ways to be smart with your floor storage space too. For example, if you have a small bedroom, consider investing in a bed with underbed storage, or an end of the bed chest. Both options look great and will allow you to store clothes, toys and belongings without taking up additional square footage. Great ways to maximise space.
Another great option for bedrooms is an open hanging rail instead of a big wardrobe. As well as creating a minimalist and clean aesthetic, losing the bulk of the wardrobe saves an abundance of space and makes for a practical and easy solution.
Whatever your family set up or your home size, there are tips and tricks you can employ to maximise space and live comfortably. Time to spring into action!
