TIPS TO HELP YOUR BABY SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT

Everyone knows that sleeping well as a parent can be tricky, especially with a new baby in the house, as they do not always sleep through the night. Whether you need to get up to change them, feed them, or simply comfort them, it’s enough to make you feel frazzled and exhausted.

While you will run to your child at any opportunity, it’s not something you can do forever. You and your child need to sleep through the night to ensure health and happiness, so how can you achieve this?

Make Sure They Are Comfortable

Swaddling is generally recommended for newborn babies up to about 2-3 months old. How long do you swaddle a baby? This is because newborns have a startle reflex, which can cause them to wake up suddenly and become fussy. Swaddling can help prevent this reflex from waking the baby and promote better sleep. However, after about 2-3 months, babies start to develop more control over their limbs and may start to roll over, which can make swaddling unsafe. It’s important to stop swaddling once your baby starts showing signs of rolling over, as this can increase the risk of suffocation.

The best way to help your child sleep through the night is to make sure they are comfortable. This can include a calming atmosphere that helps them drift off to sleep, as well as Cot Bed Fitted Sheets for their bedding to help them feel cosy and stop them from getting tangled.

You can easily create the most comfortable environment for your baby, and if there is anyone else in the house, make sure you tell them to keep quiet so they don’t disturb them. Turn the TV down, get your other kids to listen to music or game on their headphones, and you will minimize possible disturbances.

Establish Your Routine

Like anyone else, babies can become familiar with a routine, so establishing a bedtime routine for your child will make them more comfortable about going to sleep and being left alone. As they are still so young, you don’t need to do anything too complicated, so keep it simple to prevent any disruptions.

Make sure to include comfortable actions, like cuddling or shushing, to help get them to sleep. While it might not seem like it, they will recognize this as a sign that they need to sleep.

Wean Off Night Feeding Slowly

Whether breastfeeding or using the baby formula a lot of parents are unsure about when to stop night feedings. You can speak to your doctor about this to get an idea of when you can reduce the number of night-time feedings, as this can prevent disruptions and make your child more comfortable sleeping through the night.

It’s not something you can stop abruptly, though. Take it slowly so you do not make a sudden change to the routine, as this could distress them.

Let Them Self-Soothe

There are pros and cons to allowing your children to self-soothe. Some parents are fine with it, whereas others do not believe it is effective. Your baby will need to ‘cry it out’ themselves at some point, though, so while it’s okay to check on them, do not spend the rest of the night there.

You can use blankets to give them a more secure feeling, as this can mimic your touch that will put them at ease. You can also make sure they are sleeping the right way to avoid any problems.

Sleeping Soundly

There is no secret formula for getting your baby to sleep from the moment you lay them down until the moment you need to get up. Every baby is different, but these tips are the most effective ideas to try to help your baby sleep soundly, and let you have a good night’s rest, too.
