Destination Wedding? Here’s What to Wear to That Sunny European Ceremony

There is something undeniably magical about a destination wedding. The promise of sun, sea, and celebrating love in a gorgeous European setting is hard to beat. But once the excitement of booking your flights wears off, the inevitable panic sets in: what on earth am I going to wear?

If you’ve got a wedding in Italy, Greece, or Spain on the horizon, the dress code can feel a little trickier than a standard UK ceremony. You want to look chic and put-together, but you also need to battle the heat (and potentially cobblestones!).

I’ve been doing a little window shopping recently, so I thought I’d share some tips on nailing that guest look without melting in the Mediterranean sun.

Embrace Bold Colours and Prints

When in Europe, do as the Europeans do! A destination wedding is the perfect excuse to step away from the darker, safer colours we often stick to back home. Think vibrant florals, citrus hues like lemon yellow and burnt orange, or stunning ocean blues.

Not only do bright colours look incredible against a sunny backdrop (hello, Instagram photos!), but they also just feel more festive. Look for dresses for women that feature tropical prints or bold geometric patterns. A midi dress in a vibrant coral or a flowing maxi in turquoise fits the brief perfectly.

Fabric is Everything

This might be the most practical tip I can give you: check the label! When the temperature is pushing 30 degrees, synthetic fabrics can be a nightmare. You want materials that let your skin breathe.

Linen, cotton, and silk blends are your best friends here. A linen blend midi dress is elegant but airy, stopping you from overheating before the vows are even exchanged. If you are going for something synthetic like polyester, make sure the fit is loose and flowing rather than bodycon, so you get that necessary airflow.

The Alternative to the Dress

I know we automatically think of dresses for weddings, but honestly? Jumpsuits are such an underrated option for destination weddings.

A tailored, wide-leg jumpsuit looks incredibly sophisticated and can be surprisingly cool if you pick a lightweight fabric. Plus, you don’t have to worry about a sudden sea breeze causing a Marilyn Monroe moment! Pair a bright, wide-leg jumpsuit with some statement earrings and wedges, and you’ve got a look that is both comfortable and effortlessly stylish. It’s a great way to stand out from a sea of floral frocks, too.

Footwear: Proceed with Caution

Don’t learn the hard way: stiletto heels and European old towns do not mix. Many stunning venues in places like Tuscany or Santorini involve grass, sand, or uneven cobbled streets.

S

ave your ankles and opt for a block heel or a dressy wedge. They give you the height and posture of a heel but with much more stability. If the wedding is right on the beach, a pair of embellished flat sandals is totally acceptable and looks lovely with maxi dresses.

Don’t Forget the Accessories

Since you’re likely travelling with a limited luggage allowance (we’ve all tried to stuff a hat into a cabin bag, haven’t we?), accessories are the best way to elevate your outfit without taking up space.

  • Sunglasses: Essential. Go for a chic cat-eye or a classic oversized frame.
  • A Fan: Not just an accessory, but a lifesaver. A beautiful handheld fan adds a touch of old-school glamour and keeps you cool during the ceremony.
  • Jewellery: Gold tones look beautiful with a tan and sunny weather. Layered necklaces or statement earrings can transform a simple slip dress into a wedding-ready outfit.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the best thing you can wear is something you feel comfortable and confident in. Whether you choose one of those floaty dresses for women that make you feel like a Greek goddess, or sleek jumpsuits that let you dance the night away, just make sure you can move, breathe, and enjoy the prosecco!
