SALT Oakwood: Beers, Burgers and Good Times

The leafy Leeds suburb of Oakwood continues its quest for reinvention with the addition of one of Yorkshire’s best-loved independent bar brands. The new kid on the block in question is none other than SALT Brewery, who have raised their profile in recent years with a string of venues dotted across Yorkshire.

SALT Oakwood is bar number eight in their growing portfolio, taking up residence in the former Stew & Oyster venue. With a Calls Landing bar currently in the works, surely global domination is beckoning.

Stepping into the bar on a packed Friday night as England took on the USA suggests the locals have welcomed the newcomer with open arms. One reveller told us this was his fifth visit in just two weeks.

The venue has adopted the signature SALT look, with plenty of vibrant neon lighting, exposed brick walls and lashings of pop art. It’s a far cry from the rather tired-looking Stew & Oyster just months before, whose failure to move with the times had left it stale, lifeless, and largely empty.

SALT’s impressive collection of locally brewed lagers and craft ales are all present and correct, offering something for all palates. Their ingenious draught cocktails are also available, keeping queuing times down to a minimum.

We went with the light and refreshing Jute Session IPA as we checked out the food menu upstairs just opposite the kitchen, which is hosted by Burnley’s legendary Big Buns.

Founded and managed by Ahmed and Abdalla Gouda, Big Buns have managed to stand out in the overcrowded burger market with their unique take on the humble smashed patty. One bite of their juicy Blue Cheeseburger and it’s clear why these guys have, well, smashed it.

Perfectly pink in the middle, dripping with bold meaty flavour and wrapped in super soft brioche buns, these bad boys put much of the competition in the shade.

Across the table, NorthernFoodLads Don’ner Burger was equally as well received, with the gooey American cheese combined with the gourmet donner meat creating a bonafide flavour bomb. The Buttermilk Breaded Buffalo Wings are another big win, finished off nicely with a sprinkling of sesame seeds.

We also shared a large portion of the Loaded Don’ner Fries, which are topped with chunky dill pickles, chillies, and house cheese sauce.

SALT have gone self-service with their food offering, which means simply ordering at the kitchen upstairs and waiting for your buzzer to go off.

The staff throughout the bar and kitchen are all a joy to deal with, helping to create the electric atmosphere which fills the venue – something which wasn’t dampened despite the woefully dull footy between England and the USA.

SALT and Big Buns have really injected some oomph into the Oakwood, creating the kind of bar that commands repeat visits. I was already back a week later for more burger and beer action. High recommend.
