Yorkshire’s Local Tyre Buying Guide: What To Look For

Many of Yorkshire’s roads are very busy which means a lot of stopping and starting in heavy traffic. For example, the section of the A1 between junctions 50 and 49 is notorious. The Hopgrove roundabout in York is another hotspot for congestion. There again, the A58 and the A65 in Leeds frequently get jammed up even when it isn’t the rush hour. All of this puts a strain on Yorkshire drivers’ car tyres of course.

Even when you get out in the Dales and Moors, the problems with the county’s roads often persist. The B6451 around the A59 can often become congested. The same goes for the B6077 – Loxely Road – that runs between Hillsborough in Sheffield and the Damflask Reservoir at times. Even in relatively uncongested parts of Yorkshire, potholes abound, too. The problem is particularly severe in North Yorkshire but you can find tyre damaging potholes anywhere from Doncaster to Whitby.

Consequently, many residents of Yorkshire find they need to obtain reliable tyres for their cars following excessive wear and tear or damage. What should you do to make sure you get tyres that will last and offer value for money?

To begin with, a premium tyre tend to offer the greatest cost-effectiveness if you can afford to splash out on the more expensive brands. Not only are premium brands more suited to the driving conditions you will often find in Yorkshire, especially when it is raining or the temperatures have dropped, but they can withstand running over obstacles a bit better than cheaper tyres. If you prefer value for money and a quick and easy online booking when you buy tyres in Castleford, for example, then you can go to Reg Greenwood instead.

Whether you order a new set of budget tyres, some premium ones or opt for something in the middle, you should always make sure that the price you pay comes with a fitting service. Ordering tyres for your car from a marketplace website may seem less costly but this won’t be the case unless you have the tools and experience to fit them yourself.

In places like Goole or Huddersfield – just off the motorway network – you may find that there are stockists who have plenty of choice of tyres. However, in more rural parts of Yorkshire – such as Ingleton or Thirsk, for example – you might not always find the tyres you want. If so, choose a service where you can have your preferred set of tyres delivered and book your car in for the following day. Nearly all good tyre centres in the country will be able to accommodate such a request. It means you won’t turn up only to be disappointed by the range on offer.

Finally, avoid part-worn tyres. These are the cheapest option when it comes to fitting replacement tyres and they’re not illegal so long as they are structurally sound. However, there is no telling how long they’ll last and you often end up paying more for them to be fitted because they need to be replaced much sooner than brand-new tyres would.
